Tomorrow, on the beach, Baru Cormorant will look up from the sand of her home and see red sails on the horizon. The Empire of Masks is coming, armed with coin and ink, doctrine and compass, soap and lies. They'll conquer Baru’s island, rewrite her culture, criminalize her customs, and dispose of one of her fathers. But Baru is patient. She'll swallow her hate, prove her talent, and join the Masquerade. She will learn the secrets of empire. She’ll be exactly what they need. And she'll claw her way high enough up the rungs of power to set her people free. In a final test of her loyalty, the Masquerade will send Baru to bring order to distant Aurdwynn, a snakepit of rebels, informants, and seditious dukes. Aurdwynn kills everyone who tries to rule it. To survive, Baru will need to untangle this land’s intricate web of treachery - and conceal her attraction to the dangerously fascinating Duchess Tain Hu. But Baru is a savant in games of power, as ruthless in her tactics as she is fixated on her goals. In the calculus of her schemes, all ledgers must be balanced, and the price of liberation paid in full.

This is a book about female Machiavelli armed with ledgers. Also, a lesbian.I could probably end my review here, but there is much more to Baru Cormorant. Apparently, everything I need to drop everything I do and absolutely disregard my carefully planned reading schedule is three words: epic geopolitical fantasy. While the book is undoubtedly epic and downright geopolitical, it simultaneously is more dystopian than a fantasy, so if you expect your books to dazzle you with a complex magic system

A relentless tale of deceptions, betrayals, rebellion, gender identity, politics, with a royal accountant protagonistKevin Weis review at Fantasy Literature covers the themes and merits of this excellent book so eloquently that there isnt much more I can add, other than to say this book is fiercely intelligent, frequently brutal in the moral dilemmas that its central character Baru Cormorant faces, and the world it depicts is incredibly detailed and complicated, just like our own world. It

I will remake the world so that no woman will ever have to do this again. Ive been sitting here, looking at a blank word document, for almost twenty minutes. I dont even know how to possibly start a review for this book. I can honestly say that I have never read anything, in my entire life, like The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson. This book was so very quiet, but it spoke so very loudly to me. But this is easily one of the best books Ive read in my entire life. Baru Cormorant learns

I'm going to have to make a new shelf for the growing number of economi-punk titles that have been coming out. I can't believe how many of them there are, or why I get drawn so hard and fast into these kinds of tales. I can easily list one economist-protagonist for each of my fingers, and no one is more surprised than me that I'm digging it.I'm digging it hard. Can we have math geniuses make great heroes? Why yes, of course you can. SF has a very long history of doing just that. But how about

Sadly, I gave up halfway through. I just saw no reason to continue forcing my way through what didnt work for me. This is one of those cases where Goodreads ratings arent very helpful. While its accurate to say I did not like it, this isnt really a 1-star book. Its a book where I couldnt suspend my disbelief because I didnt believe in the main character and found many of the plot choices awkward and forced. The Traitor Baru Cormorant is another book like An Unkindness of Ghosts where the themes

I read an early ARC of this book because I enjoyed the author's short fiction. Turns out I have impeccable taste. This is a smart, brutal, gut-wrenching novel of conquesting and conquered, revenge, deceit, and betrayal. You'll be captivated from the very first page. Dickinson is a sly, masterful writer who pulls no punches. Get ready to have your heart ripped out through your throat. Highly recommended. Pre-order it the moment it becomes available. You won't be sorry.
