Holmes is procured by the débutante Lady Eva Brackwell to recover trading off letters from a blackmailer: Charles Augustus Milverton, who causes Holmes more aversion than any of the 50-odd killers in his vocation. Milverton is "the ruler of blackmailers" and he makes his living out of extortion. He requests £7,000 for the letters, which would cause an embarrassment that would end Lady Eva's marriage engagement to the Earl of Dovercourt. Holmes offers £2,000, all Lady Eva can pay, yet MilvertonNot that good of a criminal as he thinks himself to be.
5 stars, should be essential reading, period. Theres Sherlock and Watson of course. There is blackmail, unfortunate letters, beautiful women, and predatory, villainous greed. Oh, and theres a small revolver of justice. But SH refuses to assist Lestrade. Like I said, 5 stars.

I've been wanting to read this since a very long time. Glad to have finished before the BBC Sherlock episode airs tonight. His Last Vow, the S3 finale episode introduces a new villain, Charles Augustus Magnussen based on this short story's titular character and if Magnussen is even half as menacing as the book character, it'll be wonderful!Fast paced and riveting, this story is about 8 pages long with never a dull moment.Holmes and Watson show a different kind of camaraderie and Holmes even ends

People really don't give Arthur Conan Doyle enough credit. Sure, people love his creation of Sherlock Holmes but those who really know the character and stories know that he did make many mistakes. Calling John Watson 'James' and calling Mrs Hudson 'Mrs Turner' are terrible mistakes and things like that happen all the time in his stories but this story is very smart. The premise itself isn't anything groundbreaking, nor is the simple story. One could even argue that he made the same mistakes as
