Narrative As Books Sagarana

Column Regarding Books Sagarana
For now I'll just say that João Guimarães Rosa is one of my favorite Brazilian writers, along with Clarice Lispector. Sagarana is a brilliant collection of short-stories, one more beautiful than the next. I read Saragana in Portuguese and have no knowledge of an English edition, but some of his stories were translated separately. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

Okay, so I didn't read the whole thing, but I read "The Hour and the Time of Augusto Matraga" for my Brazilian Lit class. Although it was difficult to get through because of all the colloquialisms, it was quite enjoyable. It's considered, I found out later, the essential novel in Brazilian literature. It's basically a story about redemption, but it's so allegorical that it feels like a parable out of the Bible.

one of my favorites books.

okay, so... it's not magical-realism, but everything talks... frogs, birds, cows, oxen... everything... the grass waves and fruit grows and trees sleep and wind whispers... people live amongst it all but they are not privileged or above it... death is everywhere all the time, but not as the end, not as a monster... it's just woven into the world like everything else... people tell stories, lots of stories... and so do the oxen and the frogs... stories about all the other things that happen to
